Workouts:
  • April 3: 4 x (0.75 at threshold, 0.25 at 5k, 2:00 jog), in a 12 mile run. I did this by effort and didn't look at my splits until after the workout, then was pleased with how even I ran! My 0.75s were 4:59, 4:57, 4:57, 4:59 and my 0.25s were all 1:32! We ran a loop that is about 1.3 miles long and ended up starting and finishing in the same place each time, which was also quite satisfying. The 0.25s were all up a slight incline and ended against the wind, so they would have been faster on the track but this was good for me I suppose.
  • April 6: Long run workout of 4 miles easy, 13.1 miles at 7:00ish, 3 miles easy. I went with friends to Rock the Parkway and didn't feel up to racing it, but thought I could pace my friend Karen and try to get a 20 miler in. The pace was really hard but hitting 20 wasn't a problem, which made me feel good because it was more progress post-flu. Karen ran a PR and our other friend Sally also did - I coach both of them so it was a huge win for me too!
  • April 10: 5 x 1 mile with 1:00 recoveries, first 4 reps at threshold and last one faster. I ran 6:21, 6:16, 6:19, 6:21, 6:04 and felt the strongest I've felt on a workout since February. Plus I ran 10+ seconds/mile faster than the previous week's workout with running a mile farther and with half the recovery - progress!
  • April 13: 23.2 miles via 19 easy + 4.2 progressive fast finish in 7:20, 7:11, 7:04, 6:53 (6:39 pace final 0.2). It was really great to feel strong at the end of this one, especially because it got quite windy by the end - 'tis the season.
  • April 17: 6 x (0.75 at threshold, 0.25 at 5k, 2:00 jog), in a 13.1 mile run. I ended up running the final mile rep all at "hard" (e.g., not threshold then shifting to faster). I ran a smidge faster than I did on the April 3 workout for 2 more more miles work in warmer weather, so that was exciting! My 0.75s were 4:57, 5:01, 4:57, 4:55, 5:01 and 0.25s were 1:26, 1:28, 1:28, 1:28, 1:26. My final fast mile was 6:11. All together it was 6 miles of work at 6:24 average,
  • April 20: 3.2 miles threshold-ish (6:24 pace) in the middle of a 10.2 mile run.
  • April 23: 6 x 0.5 at "comfortably hard" w/ 1:30ish recovery jogs. I wanted to do something a little faster but not fatiguing, and this was what I settled on. I ran solo by effort and was not nearly as consistent on splits as normal with 3:04, 3:10, 3:09, 3:09, 3:15, 2:57. I thought I was running evenly until I pushed the last rep, so I was surprised 1 and 5 were so variable.
  • I didn't double at all this month, and really haven't since my Chicago build, but I will likely bring those back when work calms down.
  • Favorite workout: April 13. I love gear-shifting workouts and I felt good!

  • April 27: 27.2 miles (7:49) - the one where I overheated.
